What to Buy

Baby's First Necessities

There are many opinions on what your new baby needs the minute he/she has entered the world. Here is a sample of those first necessities:

  • diaper Bag
  • thermometer
  • bibs
  • 6-8 newborn sleepers
  • 8-12 one size undershirts
  • receiving blankets (lots!)
  • newborn diapers
  • large package of wet wipes
  • 5-6 pairs of socks
  • 2 bonnets/hats
  • bunting bag, snowsuit or car seat cover
  • diaper rash ointment
  • Vaseline
  • lotion
  • 4-5 washcloths and towels
  • 2-3 fitted crib sheets
  • a working camera and tones of film if it isn’t digital

Tip

  • Again, new parents will receive a lot of cute things as shower gifts, but those newborn outfits will last about 2 weeks, so when purchasing your items, buy some the next size up.
  • In reality, your baby will spend a lot of time in sleepers the first few weeks home, so don't spend a bundle on all those cute newborn outfits.
  • Buy gender-neutral items if you do not know the sex of your baby.

Large Ticket Items

  • Car Seat - you must have one to take baby home in. ($75-$200)
  • Crib/Basinett - depending on your proposed sleeping arrangements ($100-$400)
  • Stroller ($75-$250, and even up to $450 for a high end model)
  • Swing ($75-$175)
  • Portable Playpen ($100-$200)
  • Diaper Genie ($50-$75)
  • High Chair (avg. $100)
  • Snuggli/Sling ($40-$85)
  • Change Table (varies depending on type)
  • Rocking Chair ($100-$250)
  • Dresser (varies depending on type)
  • Monitor ($40-$75)

Tip

  • If this is a first child the mother will more than likely get some or all of these as shower gifts. However, many new moms and dads have a preference, so shop around for the items you like, and when dad is called by mom's friends, he can name the brand, style and serial number!!
  • Not all of these items are needed right away, some not at all. Talk to your friends and family members who have these items. They may sell or lend them to you at considerable savings.
  • Shop around. The best deals on the same brand of car seat for example are not always at the big department stores.
  • If you do borrow/buy secondhand, check the manufacturer's website to ensure that they meet safety standards. Some items are safer if purchased brand new.
  • Check out used toy and clothing sales such as Once Upon a Time (line up early!!)
