Feeling Contractions – But They’re Just Braxton Hicks!

At 31 weeks, I know I’m getting closer to “B” day (a.k.a. baby day). One of the clues I know the time is drawing near? The continuous Braxton Hicks contractions I’ve been feeling as of late.

These contractions can occur as early as the sixth week but are most often noticed later on in the third trimester. What they are, are the tightening of the uterine muscles, lasting anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours. They’re not painful but lately they’ve been strong enough to notice! My stomach will suddenly go from solid yet jiggly, to as hard as a rock within a matter of seconds. In addition, I’ll feel the sensation of mild menstrual cramps. This isn’t painful but has certainly become a little uncomfortable!

These aren’t real contractions so I’m not worried about meeting the baby just yet. Instead what I’m feeling is definitely just the body’s way of saying “hey we need to start training for your son’s arrival!”

I guess I can say I’m now in the midst of the uncomfortable stage. My entire body aches and my growing belly makes it difficult for me to move around. Add in these false contractions and let’s just say I’ve been a little grumpy lately. Oh how I look forward to some relief! But as the saying goes “it’s going to get worse before it gets better!”

Summary of My First Baby Shower

I had my first baby shower this weekend! My sister-in-law organized and hosted it for my husband’s side of the family. She is such an amazing hostess. Everything was absolutely perfect – from the invitations (custom created by a talented friend of hers), to the food, the games (no silly games!), and the cake. The cake was outstanding! Another friend created a gorgeous two-tiered custom cake topped with a miniature pregnant lady (me!).

Of course not everything is complete without great company. It’s always nice to hang out with my in-laws (I’m actually very lucky. I’m not just saying that!). They’re a fun bunch and my husband and I were very touched by all of the generous gifts we received. I didn’t realize it until after the shower but each guest was asked to bring a book in place of a card. Here I was wondering how they all knew I’d appreciate some books! What a fantastic idea! And what touching words they all wrote inside. I can’t wait for my son to read them someday.

Other gifts included crib sheets, change table sheets, bibs, clothes, receiving blankets, a diaper bag, a baby bath, face cloths and much more!

Everything we received will be very helpful once our little boy arrives. We are already on our way to being well equipped for the big changes ahead! To my amazement, I still have two more showers to attend! It’s such a great feeling to know that we are surrounded by amazing people who are excited for this time in our lives.
