Goose Egg – 1, Benjamin - 0

Benjamin had his first big fall tonight.

And with his first big fall came his first big bump.

He’s had falls before but this time he actually hurt himself. He was running towards me in his socks on the laminate flooring and did a face plant right into the couch.

The crying was unbearable!

My husband wasn’t home, leaving it to me to analyse the accident and make a decision about whether or not to take him to the hospital.

I originally thought he fell onto his jaw and hurt his teeth. So I gave him a teething ring and hugged him until he calmed down. I thought, after such a big fall, it was odd his lip wasn’t swelling up or blood wasn’t forming in his mouth.

But then I saw the goose egg.

It was on his forehead and seemed to be growing by the second! In the centre was a big scrape.

Luckily there was no bleeding! But I was still worried about a concussion. He fell awfully hard!

I decided to call Telehealth – a free confidential service in Ontario that connects you to a live, Registered Nurse. The number is 1-866-797-0000.

The nurse patiently listened to what happened and told me to watch out for the following concussion signs:
  • Vomiting
  • Sudden fatigue
  • Lack of coordination (e.g. no balance)
  • Rolling of eyes
  • Constant crying
She told me to visit the emergency room if he was displaying any of the above symptoms within the next couple of hours.

Unfortunately, this fall occurred right at Benjamin’s bedtime which meant he was already tired but I couldn’t just put him to bed. I kept him up for two more hours and then put him to bed.

By morning, my little monkey was well rested and, aside from the big gash on the side of his head, was just fine! I hope that was the worst fall he’ll have – is that wishful thinking?
