Five Fun Indoor Activities for Toddlers

Staying inside was easy during the holidays. Our constant visits with friends and family made the time go by quickly and kept temper tantrums at bay! But now that the holidays are over and we’re getting back into our regular schedules, I’m realizing my son needs a lot more stimulation now than he used to.

Thankfully he goes to a daycare twice a week which allows him to play with other kids. But when we’re home together, I’m discovering I need to get creative in order to keep him occupied and happy.

Here’s my list of fun (and free) activities to keep Benjamin entertained indoors this winter:

“This Little Piggy”
Benjamin and I sit on the floor and I sing the following lyrics:
This little piggy went to market
This little piggy stayed home
This little piggy had roast beef
This little piggy had none
And this little piggy went
Wee, wee, wee, all the way home!

During each sentence, I tickle a different toe. I start off with the big toe and end with the baby toe as I sing “wee, wee, wee, all the way home!”

Under the Cover – I put Benjamin’s favourite blanket over my head and tell him to find me. He pulls the blanket off and we do it all over the again. He loves this and could play for hours if I let him!

“Hide-and-go-Seek” (Toddler Version) – I hide behind a piece of furniture and call for Benjamin to find me. When he does, I go off and hide in another location.

Aqua Doodle – Benjamin received an Aqua Doodle mat for Christmas and it’s a lot of fun! It comes with crayons that you fill up with water and a special mat that can only be “drawn” on with water. It’s great because nothing else in the house can be drawn on but the mat, so there’s no mess!

Animal Sounds – Benjamin’s at an age now where he understands that different animals make different sounds. I’ll point to a cow and he’ll say “moo!” We have many books with animal pictures to look at and learn from every day.
