Let the Feeding Frenzy Begin

Gisele Bundchen and I wouldn’t get along in real life.

The beautiful, proportionately perfect Victoria’s Secret model married to football star Tom Brady, recently gave birth to a son. To be exact, she gave birth two months ago and has seemingly lost all the weight she gained (or didn’t gain). If that doesn’t make the average woman want to scream, this might; I recently read a quote by her stating that she thinks “a lot of people get pregnant and decide they can turn into garbage disposals." She is also quoted as saying that labour “didn’t hurt one bit” (seriously? How could it not?!)

Maybe in some sense I’ve transformed into a “garbage disposal” but to be honest, my cravings for food have become so intense it’s impossible not to consume anything and everything I lay my eyes on. Another point worth noting is that, unlike Gisele Bundchen and other celebrity moms, I don’t have a personal chef and trainer standing by in case I have a weak moment.

Apparently the average woman gains 25 – 35 pounds during the course of her pregnancy. If this is true, I’m falling in the above average category. At my last appointment, I was told I had gained 10 pounds within a month. Yikes! I’d like to think those 10 pounds were because I have a big baby growing inside me rather than the fact that I’ve consumed too many muffins. But which one is worst?

Can I Hire a Fairy Godmother to Organize my Nursery?

My husband and I are literally up to our knees when it comes to the nursery.

A month before becoming pregnant, we bought our first place; a two bedroom condo townhouse. We are so proud to be Toronto homeowners at last but I’ll admit, we didn’t give much thought to future baby Pigott during our search. Our thoughts instead circled around having an extra room for an office and storage.

Well now baby Pigott is on his way and our office/storage room/husband’s closet is so not ready to transform into a nursery! Every time I walk into the room, I start to panic. Boxes filled with pictures and knick knacks, clothes strewn all over the place and overflowing file folders currently call our baby’s room home. I dream of my fairy godmother making a visit and, while singing “bibbidy bobbidi boo”, cleans and decorates with a simple point of the finger. Unfortunately Disney fairytales aren’t real life.

Things we need to do include:

  • Cleaning out all unnecessary items.
  • Painting the walls.
  • Purchasing and putting together furniture.
Ideally I’d like to get this all done before May 16, the day of my first shower! But how possible is this really? It’s quite an overwhelming task that my husband and I must tackle. Maybe we can substitute the fairy godmother for family and friends instead?

The Bright Side of Dark Mornings

So apparently I’m having a smart baby.

How do I know this already? Because, since about week eight I’ve been throwing up – a lot. So what does this have to do with my baby’s IQ? Well according to an article I read on the CTV News website, researchers at the Hospital for Sick Children’s Motherisk Program discovered that feeling nauseous is tied to enhanced fetal neurodevelopment. This is great news. I never really looked into what all this vomiting could really mean. Now instead of cursing every time I throw up, I’ll be saying “Keep it coming!” Well, not quite. But it sure does put a positive spin on a crummy situation. Another piece of interesting information this article disclosed was that morning sickness was the sign of a healthy pregnancy. Women who were sick while pregnant reported having fewer miscarriages. It is also believed to lower the risk of the baby having heart problems.

While this information makes me feel better, I wonder how I’d feel if I never was sick! This study does make a point of saying that not experiencing nausea while pregnant doesn’t mean your baby won’t be smart or healthy, but it still leaves me feeling unconvinced. I know plenty of moms who didn’t have morning sickness and have smart children. Either way, while I may not be as sick as I used to be, it does provide some comfort to know that what I’m going through is for the good.
